Hey, readers, let's help out Evan:Here's a barely-related question disguised as a comment: my co-worker Bryan has guests coming in this weekend, and they've requested "the best breakfast in Indianapolis." Where, in your expert opinion, would one go to find that? (I suggested the "Big Hoss" at Mr. Dan's, but that didn't seem to cut any ice.)
One question would be what do your friends guests consider "breakfast"? Do they want greasy spoon (ala Country Kitchen?) or do they want something a bit more high-end tasty (like, say Taste or Patachou) or do they want a full on sit-down brunch? (I'd say Meridian or even Ruth's Chris).
ReplyDeleteHands down - City Cafe. Best eggs benedict in the city, their specials are always creative and amazing and their prices are ridiculously low.
ReplyDeleteSeriously - you don't even need a menu. Go to City Cafe on any Saturday morning and just say "give me the special". Patachou, Hoaglin, Taste, etc. work on Sundays when C.C. is closed, but on Saturday you can't beat it!

ReplyDeleteYes we do! The french toast IS to die for.. especially with whatever sort of berry compote they've got on hand! plus, i know more than one person who swears by their breakfast burrito to help them recover from 1 too many rathskeller beers :)

The last time I went to Puck's for Sunday brunch it was quite good. Nice view out those big windows, too.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of Meridian for a sit down fancy brunch - their blueberry pancakes literally melt in your mouth. Taste has outrageous biscuits and gravy. El Torito has a passable Sunday brunch buffet, although it doesn't hold a candle to the old Keystone Grill.

ReplyDeleteI guess it depends on high brow the guests are. For low-brow, down home fixins' and great people watching you can't beat Keystone Deli near 53rd and Keystone. It blows Patachou out of the water. . .in my opinion.

Although, we need something like my all time favorite - orange in Chicago. Two words... Pancake Flight.
I a ma great fan of Taste, but if they are big eaters or come from a town with no real deli food, I'd take them to Shapiro's in Carmel.
ReplyDeleteTaste is so over-rated. Seriously, don't waste your time there. I'd much rather have breakfast at a real restaurant, like the Sunrise Cafe.
ReplyDeleteIf you like low-brow breakfast as I do I might suggest the Canary Cafe on Fort Wayne Avenue downtown. It's wonderfully primitive and the people inhabiting the place are always an adventure. Just look for the bright yellow building...it can't be missed. The Red Eye downtown is another decent place. I do have to say that I have only eaten in either of these places late at night so I'm not real sure what morning service entails.

I have yet to find hash browns as tasty. Mmmm...
I do like Patachou on the Park, they have lovely baked goods and do make a point of using locally-sourced ingredients when they can.
I'll have to try City Cafe, though.

ReplyDeleteNot what you're looking for, perhaps, but in terms of breakfast food, the ONLY bagel in town is at the Bagel Fair, in Nora Plaza.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have enjoyed City Cafe for breakfast in the past, the two most recent times I have been there I was treatedvery rudely by the "hostess". Both times I was dressed in business attire and was polite as I could be under the circumstances. I walked out before being seated the second time.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, my current favorite other than the afforementioned Patachou and Hoaglin's is Sahm's. Always good food, fun staff and inexpensive!
I will chime in on what has already been said. I haven't been for a long time, but I agree that City Cafe has probably the best breakfast considering the value versus price. I think that Bagel Fair has the only genuine bagels in town that I have tried. I have heard many people whose opinion I respect rave about that place on Keystone. Hoaglin and patachou are both way overpriced for the quantity, flavor, and service you get there. Has anyone else been to Papa's Pancake House on Pendelton Pike? For country cookin', that was always the best for my dollar.

I have always heard great things about that place on Keystone, but has anyone been to Papa's Pancake House? That always used to be such a great home-cookin type of place!
ReplyDeleteBlueberry Hill Pancake House on E. Washington (just past 465) is awesome. Their Country Fried Steak skillet is sooooo good. And the prices are reasonable.

I thank you. Bryan thanks you. Bryan's guests will, eventually, thank you. And I'm in complete agreement with whoever was mourning the Canary Cafe and their hash browns. I light a candle for those hash browns every day.

TASTE walks away with it for me -- but if you want to eat at a place where you don't have to stand in line for a half hour first: A2Z Cafe on 96th St. is a great bet.
ReplyDeleteI agree with A2Z. It is a great locally owned cafe with great brekfast items. Frnech toast is incredible as are the biscuits and gravy. They do made to order omelets as wekk.
