Indy Food Cooperative Kicks-Off

Can't get a grocery downtown to sell local, organic, and natural foods? Well, this group of citizens has been working behind the scenes for months to bring one on their own forming a new, natural food co-op a non-profit grocery to serve downtown and Indy's near eastside residents. They are looking for 150 founding members in their first event, Saturday, November 8. The grocery will be open to the public but members will get special offers and discounts.

Folks will get a chance to meet the board of directors including Kyle Hendrix, president of the Indy Co-op board. How far along are they on this project? From the Indy Food Coop blog:

Over the past months, the Indy Food Co-op has incorporated, formed a board of directors, raised funds, hired a consultant, and determined a likely location just east of downtown Indianapolis. This event offers the first opportunity for those who support the member-owner food co-op concept to get involved and invest in the important community project. Members of the cooperative will enjoy product discounts and other special offers, however, the grocery will be open to the general public to meet a wide variety of customer food, grocery, personal care and other product needs.

Look for snacks, music, and a chance to suggest products to carry, help with the name, Attendees also will have the opportunity to provide input on co-op product offerings, and a proposed market name.
