Looks Like El Sol is Closed for Good

A few hopefuls keep asking me if I've heard if the downtown El Sol will reopen soon. I'd heard that location was closed for good, but according to a report in today's Star, it sounds like the entire business is done for. With partners suing each other, space sold, and incomplete renovations, don't look for either location of this popular eatery to re-open at all -- revamped "gourmet" menu or not. (Of course, this is the Star and I'm always distrustful that we're seeing anything close to the complete or real story in their pages these days, but bottom line, El Sol is goner.)

Nice guy, but way in over his head when the city offered him a deal to expand, or add the second location at Union Station. Toobad the government didn't check back then to see if he had the finances to open restaurant #2.

I have plenty of go-to places for reliable tacos (al pastor and birria), sopes, gorditas and such. But I still haven't found a burrito anywhere as good as El Sol - just slow-cooked pulled/shredded meat and quality refried beans in a flour tortilla - no rice or other blasphemous fillers. Where to go...?

I wish I could recommend a burrito place, but I don't know any good ones. Can you share your recommendations for tacos? I've tried a few small taquerias but would love to hear about others.

I loved El Sol's burritos as well!! My recommendation is Pancho's Taqueria. They have a location at 71st (ish) and Michigan, but they just opened another location close to me at 96th and Allisonville. Their burritos remind me of El Sol and they have a salsa bar to boot.

Peter, thanks for the Pancho's rec. I get their tacos all the time yet never even thought of trying their burritos. Probably a good bet since most of their other stuff (sopes, guac) is so good. Another of my taco sure-bets is La Parada on east New York. I particularly like their birria (goat) tacos - kinda like moist kinda gamey (in a good way) pot roast. One more taco rec is Taqueria Don Victor's (assuming their English Ave store is essentially the same as the former East St location); but really just for their Mole Tacos - chicken with little fruity (pineapple?) bits in a mole negro.

I'm still a big fan of El Maguey over at 38th and Moller. Love their pastor tacos and recently a friend had a burrito that exceeded expectations -- in size alone. Get the Mexican style guac. Mmm.

Love Pancho's, too.

What a shame. I've been eating there since infancy. When I was engaged, I was planning on asking Javier to cater our reception.
