$500,000 for Burgundy Sale
There's been a lot of talk in the wine world in the past few years about the Chinese market for collector wines. When money means almost nothing, it's all about seeking the experience. Some of the most extravagant wine tastings and dinners in recent years have happened well away from the US and Europe. So, it's no surprise that the biggest single amount paid for wine comes from a Beijing buyer -- $500,000 for 27 bottles of rare output from Burgundy. What did the anonymous Chinese billionaire's half million buy him?
* 1 case of 1978 Domaine de la Romanee Conti
* 2 bottles of the 1961, 1966, 1996 and 2003 Domaine de la Romanee Conti
* 1 bottle each of 1981, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2002 Domaine de la Romanee Conti
Someone's going to have one hell of of a vertical tasting. (Last I heard Conti was only producing about 400 cases a year.)
