Hey, kids! It's Friday and the weather's great! Look for some interesting downtown restaurant news that should be coming later today, but in the meantime, how about a round up of what some other blogs are covering:

**Over at Gut Check, they have a trailer for a new competitive eating game (on the Wii, natch). Disgusting or coolest thing ever? You decide.

**The return of the serious martini, at least in New York from the NY Times. Thank the gods, gin is back. (Quick, someone alert Scholar's Inn, excuse me, "SI". Their new martini list is *awful*.)

**Michael Bauer from the SF Chron has a unique Northern California take on "hyper-local" but fails to recognize the Bay Area is no longer nearly as far ahead as they think. More than one new chef has discovered we Hoosiers are much further ahead of the times than they expected when it comes to sourcing local meats and produce. (Between Meals)

**On the other hand, some chefs are looking to buy local and having a tough time. Anyone know any carrot farmers? (Babelfish Tartare)

You said it about SI!!! I had to drink wine last night during their half-priced martini extravaganza!

I wish someplace in Indianapolis would pick up on the classic-cocktail trend...I would love to find a bar that crafts drinks like the ones I had at Violet Hour in Chicago and Milk & Honey in NY.

P.S. The Coco Athena cocktail at SI was like drinking liquid potpourri. Yuck.

Fortunately, my martini list has always consisted of one type - gin + a tiny bit of vermouth. See? That was easy :)

If you're looking for classics, you might try Morton's. I was impressed with their latest tasting -- their taking a much more traditional approach to their -ini menu. Imagine gin and vodka drinks that actually taste like, you know, gin and vodka.

At least one of those cocktails on the SI menu arrived at our table and the mix of liquors overwhelmingly smelled like pee. It wasn't my drink or I just would have sent it back.

Braingirl, I wonder if the offending cocktail was the Jade Honey. I wasn't too fond of that one, either.

I will definitely check out Morton's, although I have my heart set on a place that uses bitters, fresh fruit juice, and egg whites to make the very kind of drinks that were so tempting to that NYTimes writer when he visited Little Branch.

Cory was chasing down a deal that he's now hearing is off and confirming another announcement. Haven't seen anything go up at Property Lines yet.

anonymous, thanks for the link...I hope L'Ex can secure a 3-way liquor license to make that happen!
