Tuesday Open Thread: Wines!

In my continuing search for everyday drinkers, I've been loving rose's this spring, but I haven't yet found the perfect white. I'm ready to move on from my favorite everyday weeknight red (the St. Francis RED) and pick up some wines for summer. What's been your favorite summer wine so far? Have a standby? A special occasion drinker? Something you've been liking by the case for the patio? What have you been thinking about what you've been drinking?

It is always, always Prairie Fume from Wollersheim Winery in Wisconsin. A dry, fruity white.

I Generally just drink whatever cheap wine I use to cook with. So, last week I made 2lbs of mussels ala Brugge style with a half bottle of big house white, or use Papio Chardonnay.

Both are ridiculously cheap, and tend to work a bit better since their flavors aren't as refined as a higher quality wine.

I love Mallow Run's Rhubarb Wine and their Picnic White. Very good!

I like Smoking Loon's Viognier in the summer.

For the past two Summers, Torrontes has been my warm waether grape of choice. I am also a big white Rhone kinda guy. Check out Tangent Sauv Blanc at Kahn's. It is a true stand out, sale priced at $9.99.

The Four Graces Pinot Gris has been my white wine of choice so far this year. Really well-priced especially considering how valuable Oregon grapes are right now. Ostatu Rioja Blanco is also a great standby--a Spanish white that epitomizes patio wine.

sauvignon blanc - more dry than sweet varieties - Chateau St. Michelle and Villa Maria are a few inexpensive favorites.

Bogle Chardonnay I could drink by the case on the patio. Was that the question? :) While relaxing to the hum of my air conditioning unit on my patio and gazing at my urban view: I-65/I-70 split I've been thinking about a bakery...one I'd like to own. Thanks for a great blog by the way.

braingirl, this is a posting EDIT: :)

"what have you been thinking about what you've been drinking" is different than my interpretation of "WHILE you've been drinking". Haha. just goes to show where my head is...really in a bakery.

thanks again...

A great "sitting on the deck in the evening" wine that my husband and I love during the summer is Hogue's Late Harvest Riesling or thier regular Riesling. It is one we usually buy by the case just to keep in on hand...and the nice thing is that it is under $10 a bottle.

They are hard to find here in Indiana ... but some of the most creative and wonderful summer wines are made by Navarro Vinyards. OK, they're friends and I'm biased. But they are also unique, awarded right and left -- look, especially for their gewurtztraminers (unlike any you will ever taste!) and unusual chardonnays. I see them occasionally here (I'm thinking Jonah's Market perhaps?), but not often. www.navarrowines.com

Personally, A bit of Williamette Valley Cellar Masters Reserve Reisling always hits the spot, and you really can't beat the price. Last year was not the best of late, but still an excellent option.
