Upcoming Events: Diamond in the Rough Sale

If we didn't know it was October by the weather, we'd know it by the spate of upcoming food and wine events. From fundraisers to tastings, brunches to cocktail hours, it's definitely that time of year -- and who can believe the holidays are just around the corner? First up is one of my favorites of the year: Kahn's Diamond in the Rough Sale.

This annual wine sale often features more rough than diamond, but searching for those diamonds is half the fun. Since many of the wines are overstocks, discontinued or damaged labels, discontinued vintages, lines, wineries, or closeouts, you can find some real treats here if you just look -- and taste -- hard enough. Even more fun is the game you play afterwards to see what parts of your order you actually get. (As I learned last year, when they call you, pick your wine up *immediately*. Our 24-hour delay resulted in some of the best wines we'd ordered be pilfered for other customers.) Still, if you're up for the chaos, there are deals to be had -- especially if you're in the market for a case or two of very reasonably-priced holiday party wines. Case orders only, although last year, they split cases to fill orders which means you may get a bunch of partials.
