Monday Lunchtime Open Thread

A pumpkin stemImage via Wikipedia While I recover from a busy weekend and prepare for actual, you know, *work*, I wanted to find out what's on your minds! Lots of new places to try from recent openings. A general economic slow down is scaring some restaurateurs a bit, but most seem ready to ride it out for a while. Winter is kicking in with all your favorite comfort foods. Thanksgiving is right around the corner. And I'm contemplating the mighty pumpkin this week (with recipes to come.)

So, what's on your minds? What meal did you love this weekend? What restaurant are you loving -- or hating -- right now? What would you like to see the legislature or new President do about food and sustainable farming? Today, *you* get to do the content!

My best weekend meal was homemade potato soup. Nothing better on a grey fall day.

This weekend I ate so well. The classic cheese pizza from Hazzy and Izzy's did a great job soaking up the alcohol from two cocktails. I was highly, highly impressed with Papa Roux...had the creamy cheesy etouffee parmisotto, cole slaw, and corn bread. And Siam Square is my new favorite place - the pad thai and the pad pen with tofu were delicious.

We get baked potato bar sometimes at the cafeteria at work. Cheez Whiz, sour cream...it sounds gross, but man is it comforting.

Had a nice meal at Jockamo's pizza Saturday night. This, our second trip, was better than the first time, and much tastier.

Finally made it to Siam Square Friday night and it was excellent. It was especially nice to find out an old acquaintance and his wife are the owners.

We went to Fogo de Chao on Saturday night for my husband's birthday and at first I was disappointed - $8 to valet and our 8:00 reservation was "running a bit behind". I wouldn't care but their bar is SO crappy, we went in and tried to get a drink, but the bartenders were going insane doing a service bar and we couldn't get a drink. Once we got seated, not too late, it was fine and the service was so good it almost made up for it. But it was packed and I kept thinking I'm pretty sure this isn't a depression yet, with this many people out for $46 per person dinner. :)

I am in mad love with Siam Square and cannot stop ordering their Siam Rolls. They are SO good.

Per your mention, we went to brunch at Hot Shotz Sunday morning. The food? Marginal (don't make omlets with vegetable oil. ick!) but the .99 cent bloody mary's were a nice touch. The saving grace? THE SERVICE! It was SO obvious that they wanted to provide a great experience, and they were so sincere and attentive. THAT will bring us back, with the hopes that they get their acts together with the food.

Siam Square. Learned that they use local ingredients whenever they can. Hurray!

I also was at Hot Shotz over the weekend and I agree with Country Mouse/City Mouse...food um..OK...sevice terrific. Not sure though, which would win out for a return visit...a great food/bad service place or a OK food/good service place? I am going to have to stay true to the food!
