It's Guy Fawkes Day!

Today, in these times of political turmoil, nothing beats a good, old-fashioned effigy burning. At least, that's the philosophy behind your basic Guy Fawkes Day party. Complete with a bonfire, fireworks, and yes, a stuffed, flammable figure of the famous traitor, it's a great way to celebrate fall. Sure, it's a UK holiday similar to our Independence Day, but I like to think of it as a great excuse for a bonfire and a little ale drinking. Here's where my friend Mike comes in. For him, Guy Fawkes Day is a great reason to have a party every year gathering friends for supper and a bonfire. While he makes a pot roast and some stew, we all pitch in dishes and desserts. We bring beer -- he provides the effigy and fire works. Luckily, he lives in the country. I can think of no better excuse to play with fireworks on a the dark, winter evening. Here's to the Gun Powder Plot!
