Newsflash: Barcelona Tapas Opens in May...We Hope

OK, let's try this again. Inside Indiana Business has a round up of restaurants opening downtown this spring and summer -- some you care about (Barcelonas Tapas) and others you don't (Taco Bell at the Circle Center Mall food court, yea!) They've counted seven new places opening between now and July, including Harry & Izzy's (April 16), Capitol Grille (April 30), and Weber Grill (late May).

The good news? The long-awaited opening of Barcelonas Tapas looks like it is fianlly scheduled for sometime in May. They're in a completely different location than I originally thought -- on the ground floor of a building on the north east corner of Ohio and Delaware. They're currently hiring servers. (I just popped round to O'Malia's and checked it out on the way.)

Also, look for Paradise Cafe (like Panera Bread but not as nice or good) opening next week in the Chase Building and a Brothers Bar and Grill at Union Staion.

Heh? Granted, it's taking them forever to get work done (at Barcelona Tapas), but there is, in fact, a building - with a sign in the window saying they are hiring servers/staff...unless it has been leveled in the last few days.

Ack! I must be thinking of the wrong corner then. I knew I was going to get busted for not double checking :-) Well, then maybe they are on schedule for May. I'll check it out further.

Is Brothers Bar & Grill a chain? Is it going in to the old El Sol location? We really need a Mexican restaurant downtown

My understanding is that Brothers Bar and Grill is a popular place in Lafayette and is expanding down here. Also, I'm still hearing from people who know more than I do that El Sol is planning to re-open. But more on that soon.

I agree that we need a good Mexican restaurant downtown. I think Barcelonas Tapas will do well if they don't screw anything up.

The location for Barcelona Tapas will be a tough one I think. To capture the Mass Ave crowd, you have to get folks to venture past the "scary" Wheeler Mission; and folks/tourists from downtown are akeered to venture east of Penn or so. Hopefully it can become a bit of an anchor for that deadzone, though.

That IS a tough location, plus Spanish tapas - as much as I love it - will be a hard sell here. The local masses are really more partial to basic meat-and-potato dishes. But I hope BARcelona works. The closest thing I know would be something like Cafe Iberico in Chi.

I am really looking forward to Barcelona's opening. I agree that that is an awful location, but perhaps the presence of the restaurant will prove beneficial to that area. And I disagree that people around here won't get into tapas. If Indy folks can learn to love sushi, they can certainly learn to love tapas, which in my opinion will be less alien to people than exotic and raw seafood.

for those looking for a preview of Barcelona, their St. Louis location menu is available here.

I talked with the managing partner of Barcelona today. He waid they will open either May 1 or May 15. Sounds like it will be a good joint and, for those who prefer hops and barley over grapes, they will have 6 to 8 taps and one of the first beers on tap will be a Delirium (either Nocturnum or Tremens).

Barcelona looks great inside. I heard India Garden is taking the space directly next door. Also heard Wheeler Mission is working on a deal to move. Anyone?
