Sunday Alcohol Sales (Fake Out!)

I was so sucked in over at indychannel.com by the headline announcing extended alcohol sales on Sunday! Actually, it's just for the switch to Daylight Savings Time this coming weekend. So, if you're out at 3:00 a.m. -- really 2:00 a.m. -- on Sunday ('cause, you know, who isn't?), you'll be able to buy booze until *4:00 a.m* (really 3:00 a.m. so not as decadent as it looks.) Either way, it's an extra hour to party.

The article is also kind enough to remind us that because we're idiots and can't stay sober to get to the polls, or because there's a risk someone will trade drinks for votes, we get nothin' until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. (You might as well go vote.)

Forgive the profanity, but this is a crock of shit. This handout was given in the first year of DST (another crock if you ask me...) and now has been given for another two.

Thanks, Mitch!

The alcohol for votes theory does have a sound historical basis, though one wonders if it is still relevant.

Fact: George Washington lost his first run for the Virginia Legislature because he didn't supply the voters with the traiditonal liquor. The second time around, he got the procedure down and won.

A friend of mine spent part of an election day in rural West Virginia sitting in a reporter's car outside a polling place. They observed people going up to a particular car in the lot to pick up an already-marked ballot before entering the building, then returning an unused ballot to the person in the car in exchange for a half-pint of whiskey.

All anyone who wanted to buy votes in such a manner would have to do would be to go to the liquor store *before* election day to stock up — and if the only way to get a half-pint on Election Day is to trade your vote for one, that might make it much easier for some people to decide how to cast their ballot.

Reminds me of the Monica Lewinsky era - my great-grandmother spebt time in jail being force fed because she had been marching for women's right to vote, just so 80 years later ML could... ah well.

Anyway, I tend to need a glass of merlot to handle watching election returns, so I amall in favor of this.

OMG I know! I thought the same thing. I was really disheartened to find out you can booze on Sunday in Kentucky. Kentucky!
